Program Description
Major Features of the Program
- The Food Industry Career Pathways program at Kauai Community College offers training for persons seeking to enter careers or to increase the success of existing an enterprise in the food and agriculture industry. The programs include formal courses, inter-active seminars, independent studies and research, internships and assistance with job placement.
- The major goal of the Food Industry program is to increase production of locally grown food by providing training in the skills of home gardening, community gardening and small commercial farming. Entrepreneurship
- The US Dept. of Agriculture has found that a major cause of farm failures is due to a lack of business planning and management. The Entrepreneurship series provides these skills to persons in agriculture and also to those in a wide rage of other enterprises. A series of three courses include training in the skills and knowledge of entrepreneurship as follows: Business Planning and Development (Fall semester), Business Management and Growth (Spring Semester) and Creative Financing (Summer Session). This series is the foundation for success for candidates seeking to start a business or non-profit project or for those wishing to improve an existing enterprise. The content proceeds from basic to advanced concepts, skills and knowledge. On-going counseling continues as candidates enter internships, jobs or as they advance in a career. The content and methods are drawn from MBA programs (Master of Business Administration) offered at America’s leading universities.
Successful Gardening
“Learning by doing” is the major focus of the Campus Garden. Training and hands-on experience in acquiring the practical skills of organic vegetable gardening is provided on a flexible weekday schedule and on Saturday mornings from 8:30 till noon. Students learn to prepare the soil, plant, cultivate, harvest and then to sell the produce in the College’s Community Market, a “farmers market event” to held on campus each Saturday. The students also share in the organic harvest as a personal and healthful nutritional benefit.
Growing Food Seminar Series
Academic training in the skills and knowledge of food production systems is provided in this series of four seminars comprised of 10 sessions each held on Campus.

The residents of Kaua'i have a variety of higher education needs. At Kaua'i Community College, our goal is to help you meet those needs. Using the resources of campuses across the state allows Kaua'i Community College and the University Center, Kaua'i to be more responsive to the needs of Kaua'i residents. Students are taking courses that are held on campus and other campuses statewide through distance learning technologies
